Audi has released details and design sketches of its Urban Concept Cars, an ultra-light car designed for use in congested cities. Configured with a 1+1 seating layout and powered by two e-tron electric motors, it combines elements of a racing car, a roadster, and an urban car into one new concept. On board there is room for two people, their position slightly staggered and sitting low to the ground. Interestingly, entry to the car is via the tailgate. The roof is designed to be maneuverable and slides to the rear to open. The cockpit consists of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer, which integrates the undercarriage of both seats. The Audi urban concept rolls on wheels with a 21-inch diameter.

They measure in at 125 inches in length, 67 inches across, and sit just 47 inches in height, but the most interesting feature is a curb weight of less than 1,100 pounds.
The result is a concept car with no unnecessary weight, and one that concentrates on the pure essence of sporty motion. The car has a sleek body. The wheels are free-standing and the surrounding protective plates feature blinking strips of LED lights. The highly concentrated look of the technical study, with its forward-urging lines, is dynamic – it lends Audi’s design language a completely new impetus.

Power comes from two ‘e-tron’ electric motors, which run on a lithium-ion battery stored in the floor, and the driving range is thought to be around 40 miles. A sliding canopy that forms part of the body opens up to allow the driver and one passenger to enter the car.
